Session 003

In defence of brand guidelines

As a brand strategist working tirelessly to help brands build equity, I fundamentally disagree that brand guidelines aren’t important — especially for organizations where multiple groups of people “touch” the brand.

These guidelines, when used as intended, drive consistency and allow the persona to shine through regardless of the channel — whether it be colour, photography, or graphics.

Can they be limiting? Some might say so. But the right design team will show you variability in your social templates. And the right campaign and content strategy will build off those guidelines to elevate your persona — your vibe.

A guideline isn’t a fence. It’s a throughline: the thread that keeps every touchpoint recognizably, unmistakably yours. The brands that feel coherent across a billboard, a reel, and an onboarding email aren’t lucky. They’re disciplined.

Protect the thread, and the creativity built on top of it gets stronger — not smaller.
